Why did you choose a destination wedding?
We loved the idea that everyone could have their own holiday- a week in paradise and attend a wedding - sounded perfect. A small, relaxed and intimate wedding was what we had envisioned and it was exactly so.

Why Shangri-La’s Rasa Ria?
We had stayed at the Shangri-La’s Rasa Ria resort previously on a family holiday and fell in love with the place and the Malaysian hospitality. When we saw their on-site Wedding Pavilion we realised that it would be a sensational place to get married.

How did your friends and family react?
Surprised at first - it was a new concept for many. People really got excited and motivated by the combination of a wonderful holiday and our wedding. It also provided an excuse to get away from the stress of everyday life and for all it was so much fun.

How long did it take to plan?
We were engaged for 13 months, but it only took between three and six months of easy planning combined with excellent help from resort staff to get it all done.

How did your venue help with your planning?
The Shangri-La’s Rasa Ria has a full time wedding planner who takes away all those destination wedding stresses. From the moment we decided to get married at the resort up to the last moment of the reception the wedding planner took care of everything and anything we needed.

How many guests and where did they stay?
We had 40 family and friends attend the wedding from all over Australia.

Anything you would have done differently?
To be honest, no. It was just perfect!

Did you have any pre-ceremony entertainment or activities?
Our bridesmaids and groomsmen, in conjunction with the resort, organised activities the day before the wedding including massages and cocktails for the ladies and a river cruise and great Japanese meal experience for the guys.

Describe your reception ...
Four awesome ingredients: sunset and sand, relaxed atmosphere yet fun, family and friends as well as delicious food!

Your wedding highlight?
The whole experience! It wasn’t just another wedding on the calendar but a week’s worth of festivities and celebration.

Any advice for couples planning a similar wedding?
Remember your dream. There are times during the planning when it seems hard to imagine how it will all come together. Stay with a destination wedding - the end result is well worth the journey.
