Located off the coast of Africa within a large coral reef, Mauritius is unspoilt by mass tourism, crime or political upheaval. The Portuguese discovered Mauritius, but the island was settled first by the Dutch in 1598. The French then held control of Mauritius until 1810, when the British evicted them. As such, Mauritius offers a wonderful blend of customs.
With the vast array of cultures - English, French, Creole, African, Indian and Asian, it is easy to see why Mauritius is referred to as "the most cosmopolitan island under the sun.
Even though the locals speak Creole and French amongst themselves, English is the official language. Mauritius is a stylish and sophisticated haven for those in search of peace and tranquility with the finer things in life available.
