Bokissa Eco Adventure Island

Is there one word that encapsulates adventure, romance, escapism, and quiet dining under the tropic stars?

There is…..

And that word is Bokissa. To be exact, Bokissa Eco Adventure Island.

Because here in the north of a dreamy Y-shaped collection of islands called Vanuatu, Bokissa Adventure Island lays amid a garland of coral reefs washed by sky-blue seas, lulled into care-free bliss by tropic breezes that play through the palms along the private beachfront then across the kaleidoscopic gardens around the pool, to disappear into the near-100ha of ancient rainforest.

Where else will you find the perfect island escape for that quiet honeymoon, that finally feet-up retirement holiday, the opportunity to read a book from our library in a hammock beneath the palms on the quietest beach you’ve ever experienced, yet virtually on Australia’s shores?

Or the chance to walk on the very beach on which author James A. Michener often sought inspiration for his masterpiece Tales of the South Pacific while serving with the American Navy on nearby Espiritu Santo in the 1940s… so dare we say it, is Bokissa Island really where South Pacific began?

Maybe you’d like to learn more of our fascinating history: how the very first explorers from the Bismarck Archipelago of New Guinea made great sea voyages here in hand-carved canoes guided only by the stars 3000 years ago, how the Americans had an important Patrol Boat base on Bokissa during the Pacific War to help protect the ships massing for the eventual Battle of the Coral Sea…And how those who plotted the ill-fated Coconut Revolution of 1979 planned their unsuccessful overthrow of the Vanuatu government right here on our island…

And what about our ‘Mystery Grave?’ Go in search, and when you find it, wonder at just who lays below the crude headstone whose inscription is just four figures – the year 1884 engraved by a human finger in its rough concrete surface. No name, no details. Just a date in memory of some early adventurer.

And if you are seeking your own adventures further a field we’ve escorted dives with our professional Dive Instructors on the legendary President Coolidge that’s the world’s greatest and most accessible wreck dive, or maybe the smaller MV Henry Boneaud or other wreck or coral reef sites.

Or our Malo River by sea kayak is an experience never to be forgotten as you weave your way along rivers draped with jungle vines and wild orchids, where you can swim in an azure Blue Hole fed by underground springs, paddle below a rusty bridge that’s a legacy of the Pacific War, and enjoy an idyllic beach barbecue.

Or possibly you’d like to have us pack a picnic hamper so you can find your own pristine beach on Bokissa Island for a day totally to yourselves, or join our crew hand-lining in fish-laden waters off our reefs, or troll for marlin, sailfish, mahi mahi, dog tooth and yellow fin tuna… or try your hand at salt-water fly-fishing – we’ve already one World Record to our name !

And at day’s end take a dip in our 25m pool, a drink at the swim-up bar, and share dinner under the stars on our deck with new-found friends as you dine on fresh rock lobster or local crayfish, just-caught fish, famous Santo beef, the local pork or chicken, freshest organic tropical fruits and vegetables (not to mention our famous coconut pie!)

And of course we’ve a well-stocked bar with an extensive wine list to ensure your absolute dining pleasure.
After all, isn’t that what a honeymoon or a holiday is all about? And as romance is high on the list of reasons to visit Bokissa, we’ve even our own ‘Outer Island Chapel’ in which a wedding can be held amid decorations of frangipani and hibiscus – and complete with a local Melanesian Children’s Choir.

(MASSAGES AND TREATMENTS USING OUR VERY OWN NATURAL OILS AND FRAGRANCES CAN BE ARRANGED WITH OUR OWN LOCAL LADIES, AND ARE AN IDEAL PRELUDE FOR A WEDDING, HONEYMOON OR OTHER SPECIAL OCCASION ON OUR ISLAND. OR SIMPLY FOR SOME PAMPERING IN PARADISE.)

Perhaps you may choose the local island church… following the ceremony with your own candle-lit dinner for two on our private jetty over-looking the channel between Bokissa and our neighbouring islands.

Or if family or friends have come along to share this special occasion with you on our Island, we can set up your own celebration party at our poolside bar and barbecue…

No matter your reason for being with us, you will find yourself instantly among friends on Bokissa Adventure Island. The ever-smiling Ni Vanuatu people are considered the most gracious and friendly in all of the South Pacific, and it gives them as much pleasure seeing you enjoy yourselves, as you yourself experience our total escapism.

Nothing is ever too much trouble, too different or too trivial for our dining, bar, watersports, rooms and entertainment staff.

Just ask. But sorry, don’t mention in-room TV, radio, phones, or business centres as we just don’t disturb the peace of Bokissa Adventure Island for our other guests with such diversions. If you do need to make a phone call, we’ve a card-operated phone in our boutique gift shop (Vanuatu Phone Cards are available here also,) and if you really can’t get away from the computer, we’ve email connections in our office as well.
