New Caledonia, New Romance
New Caledonia is where the South Pacific takes on a touch of romance.
Two and a half hours from Sydney, or two hours from Brisbane, Australia’s closest Pacific neighbour is a land of isolated beaches, mountain rainforests, coral reefs and the world’s largest lagoon.
It’s where talented chefs serve fine cuisine in waterfront restaurants, where street cafes offer a view across azure bays, and where a short boat trip can deposit you alone on a white sandy islet for a castaway’s picnic.
Take a horse-drawn carriage around the bays and beaches of the capital Nouméa to see what New Caledonian life is all about. Coconuts are sold alongside pate and baguettes in the markets, Melanesian men play petanque in the squares, road cyclists fly past in packs and office workers take to their sailboards on their lunch breaks.
At the Tjibaou Cultural Centre, the arts and spirituality of the Pacific is brought together in a showcase of island culture. The artworks draw upon thousands of years of tradition, housed spectacularly in a landmark building by celebrated Italian architect Renzo Piano.
Among the shops and providores, you’ll find everything from exquisite pastries and hand-made chocolates to traditional crafts and European fashions.
Beyond Nouméa, New Caledonia’s natural allure becomes more apparent. Pristine beaches are fringed with coconut palms and New Caledonia’s iconic pine tree araucaria columnar, while rugged mountain ranges are laced in unspoilt rainforests.
Surrounding New Caledonia is the largest lagoon in the world, a marine playground rich in tropical sea life that begs to be explored. Dugongs, whales, dolphins, turtles, nautilus and myriad tropical fish can all be found in one of the Pacific's most diverse and pristine marine ecologies.
To visit New Caledonia is to sample the best that Melanesia has to offer. Best of all, it’s only a short flight away.
