More on Winter Issue 2010

Are you dreaming of escaping the cooler weather and heading to a tropical island where the sun always shines and the beach always beckons? Or are you more the type of person who enjoys the cool, crisp days and long, cosy nights of winter?

Personally, I love this time of year. It seems that life slows down a notch. The days are shorter and weekends are the perfect time to explore towns and villages not too far from home (but far enough away to be an ‘escape’!). When I think winter weekends away, I think fireplaces, spas, digging through antique shops, indulging in gourmet cheese and red wine - all things that I probably would not do on a summer beach escape. If you, too, love a bit of winter indulgence then turn to page 104 and start planning your next weekend away with our fantastic Winter Getaways feature. Not only have we discovered some of the loveliest cool escapes but we’ve also managed to put together a great range of special accommodation packages for you.

I also have my moments of dreaming of long, languid days on some idyllic tropical island, of fresh breezes coming from an endless ocean, of gorgeous beaches with barely another person to be seen. The general feeling around the Holidays for Couples’ office is that most people do want at least one tropical island getaway during winter, which is why we’ve asked our regular travel correspondents, John Borthwick and Craig Tansley, to revisit some of their favourite islands.

John took us up on the difficult (!) task of revisiting the islands of Indonesia including Bali, travelling from one end of the island to the other, and then going beyond to Borobudur on the island of Java, a destination that, having visited myself, I honestly believe should be on everybody’s must see list. Craig contributed largely to our major Pacific Islands feature where we’ve showcased the best things for couples to do on some of the most loved Pacific Islands. We’ve also thrown in some islands that you may not have yet considered.

We’ve also got a big water theme happening this issue with our extensive Cruise feature where you will find a style of cruise for just about every taste and most budgets. I have to say that I recently enjoyed my first cruise in 10 years with Royal Caribbean’s Middle East voyage and my husband and I are ‘cruise-converts’. My husband says it is one of the most relaxing holidays he’s had. We loved so much about cruising - only unpacking once, not thinking about where our next meal would be or how much it would cost (cruising is all inclusive), the great kids’ club which left us free to enjoy each other’s company and the exotic ports of call.

Still with the water holidays theme Matthew Brace’s Sea of Love piece looks at 10 of the most romantic styles of water based holidays, many with a soft-adventure side for those that want some action.

There is plenty more inside this issue of Holidays for Couples, in fact more than enough to keep you inspired for some time! So, sit back, relax, and start planning where you’ll go to take time to be a couple again.

PS: Don’t forget our fantastic spa feature ... a spa treatment together as a couple can be so romantic. Or, go the whole way and book a wellness retreat together! Either way, our spa feature has you covered.
