More on Spring Issue 2010

Recently, I’ve been thinking a lot about my habits when I travel, noticing a few  areas where I could help this precious planet by doing my bit to save energy, water and people’s time. The reason I ‘put it out there’ is because maybe, when we think about our own travel habits, we can all find some ways to cut back on wastefulness. In fact, while staying at the fabulous Traders Hotel in KL, where I really got to look honestly at ways I could become a ‘greener-traveller’, I spent one evening writing some random notes, detailing simple things we can all do to make a difference. These formed the basis our Easy Eco Guide on page 82, part of our Shades of Green feature. We are not claiming to be eco-warriors by any means, but the idea behind this feature is to get us all thinking ... each of us doing a little bit collectively adds up to a lot. Part of this feature we also think you’ll enjoy is Eco-Chic Romance in which Rachael Oakes-Ash profiles ten fabulously romantic getaways with serious eco-credibility.

Perhaps the ultimate romantic getaway is a Destination Wedding and we have nearly 30 pages of the best destinations to do just this. But this feature isn’t limited to our engaged readers – those of us who have been married for a while and who are looking for a way to celebrate a major milestone, or just reignite a bit of the fun and joy of earlier days can renew their vows at most, if not all, of the locations.

Craig Tansley is one of our regular writers, you could say he knows what couples are looking for with their romantic getaways.  We received a message from him along the lines of: “French Polynesia has never really been promoted as an adventurer’s paradise because marketing would much rather have you think of empty, white beaches, perfect, still water and slow days in over-water bungalows. But the truth is Tahiti is the ideal adventurous couples’ Mecca. I spent two weeks doing nothing but adventure here and it only scratched the surface ...” How could we say no to that? Turn to page 99 to read about Tahiti for the adventure-seeking couple and while you are there make sure you check out his piece on Tasmania, also for the more spirited traveller.

There is so much more to this issue - Matthew Brace profiles Milan for the chic couple, Tricia Welsh has found some of the best local weekend getaways for the couple who like a gourmet angle to their getaways, and I was even lucky enough to visit Luxor with my husband and write about this most incredible destination. Last, but not least, is our massive Indian Ocean feature. Many say that the Maldives is their perfect idea of THE most romantic island destination in the whole world, others say the glamour and luxury of Mauritius is what they are looking for with their island escape. We’ve gone further and profiled neighbouring Indian Ocean islands Réunion and Seychelles as well.

Enjoy this issue!
