Room for Two - Azia Resort and Spa, Cyprus

> > by Tanya Joslin

Azia Resort & Spa, Cyprus is one of those rare finds; luxurious enough to be part of the prestigious Small Luxury Hotels group, and a place with the heart and soul that is usually only found at a family-run, boutique destination. And this is what is so special about Azia.
Created a quarter of a century ago by Mrs Dora Economidou, Azia is a family affair with Dora still passionately involved, along with her two daughters who were instrumental in the recent revamp and upgrade that has helped Azia rise from its former life as a lovely but somewhat standard hotel into its current role as one of Paphos’ most renowned destinations.

THE ROOMS

Azia is made up of three parts and has a room to fit many budgets. The standard rooms can be found in the ‘Blue’ part of the resort. ‘The Club and Spa’ section features upgraded rooms with larger balconies and access to the Club Lounge where snacks and drinks can be enjoyed at certain times of the day. Guests of this category are also able to access the world-class spa for a steam or swim any time of the day. Some Club Bungalow Suites even boast a private balcony with jacuzzi (one of our favourite memories was a glass of wine in the jacuzzi at sunset!).

‘The Residence’ is the ultimate destination at Azia, its own private haven of suites that will include butler service and a host of luxurious extras (these were in the process of being finished when we visited, check availability at time of booking).

VENTURING OUT

There is so much to see while visiting Cyprus that it deserves an article, but to get you started I’ll tell you about our three highlights:

1) A day in the mountains – Troodos Mountains are home to many small Cypriot villages, Byzantine monasteries and churches. Hire a car and stop at random cafes and restaurants along the way.

2) Paphos Harbour–walk along the quay and eat at a taverna or seafood cafe before heading to the castle (circa 1391).

3) Kourion – this was one of the most astounding ancient sites we visited in Cyprus, once a city that played an important role through the Greek Hellenic and Roman periods.

COUPLES WILL LOVE

The day beds draped with dreamy white muslin cloth that have been sited to take full advantage of the relaxing surrounds - the grounds are like a mini Garden of Eden with an abundance of palm trees, orange trees, jasmine, banana trees, lavender bushes and brightly-coloured bougainvillea. But the best part of the view? As beautiful as the gardens are it is the stunning cobalt waters of the Mediterranean just metres beyond that will truly take your breath away.

TASTE TEMPTATIONS

Cyprus is a great food destination, particularly for seafood, and you will no doubt be enjoying the many options available on the island. At the resort, though, Azia offers four restaurants, each with a different style ranging from the casual Katoi cafe outlet where breakfast is enjoyed to the à-la carte offerings in Akamas Restaurant. We found it hard to drag ourselves away from the massive pool area and the casual dining offered here, although the buffet evening is a highlight you won’t want to miss.

GETTING THERE

Fly Etihad Airways to Abu Dhabi and grab a 3.5 hour connecting flight to Cyprus. Hire a car at Larnaca Airport or arrange with the resort for a transfer. Visit www.Etihadairways.com to book flights.
