More on Pearls of the Pacific - Bora Bora
There’s no other island on Earth that conjures up as much tropical, romantic imagery as this one; the very name itself is enough to trigger your very own South Seas fantasies – it’s thought by many to be that very mythical utopia itself - Bali Hai - imagined by author James A Michener in his infamous Tales Of The South Pacific, and it’s where our Nicole chooses to go on honeymoon (along with the rest of Hollywood’s well-heeled, beautiful bunch). Bora Bora is home to the world’s most beautiful lagoon, but what’s just as impressive are the near-kilometre high peaks that descend into it.
Could you find a better tropical setting in the Pacific? It’s home to over 500 over-water bungalows (indeed, the over- water bungalow was practically born here!) but because of its setting, each bungalow feels as private as if you were the first to discover Bora Bora. The island’s visitors are predominantly honeymooners meaning you’ll have all the privacy in the world from intrusive visitors. While there’s plenty of water-based activities on Bora Bora (you’ll need to take a lagoon cruise to understand the size and quality of the lagoon), the emphasis here is on doing very little. Sleep in and swim from your bungalow, get breakfast delivered in bed, then spend the day lazing by the lagoon.
Should you wish to explore, a 32 kilometre coast road takes you past quiet, quaint villages, while any walk to the mountainous interior will be entirely private (everyone’s on the lagoon) and well worth the spoils - the views from Mt Pahia are magical - and no visit to Bora Bora can be complete without a visit to the world-famous Bloody Mary’s Bar & Restaurant, with its sand floors and thatched roofs - it’s where celebrities have been coming since 1979 to let it all hang out.
WHERE?
Bora Bora is located in French Polynesia 6500 kilometres from Australia. Bora Bora is a 50-minute flight west (259 km) of the capital Papeete on the main island of Tahiti.
TOP THREE THINGS TO DO:
Get out on that lagoon! Bora Bora is all about that big, gorgeous thing - so book a half or full day lagoon cruise and travel across it, snorkel under it and swim in it.
See the lagoon from the air in the comfort of your own helicopter on a scenic flight. It’s expensive but then Bora Bora wasn’t meant to be done on a budget.
Don’t rely on the restaurant at your resort – get out and about. Bora Bora has everything from road-side roulettes (family-run food trucks) to some of the Pacific’s best cuisine hot spots – try Villa Mahana with its innovative (and very famous) fused Mediterranean and Polynesian cuisine.
